SC grants petition and schedules hearing for appeal by Musharraf

ISLAMABAD: A petition to file an appeal against the sentence imposed on former President Pervez Musharraf has accepted by the Supreme Court of Pakistan (SC). According to his attorney, the late dictator Musharraf filed the appeal while he was away.

Legal provisions allow decisions made by the Special Court to be directly appeal to the Supreme Court. Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa question the petition’s lack of a number during the proceedings.

The appeal was denied by the Registrar’s office on the grounds that the prisoner had not surrendered. With the words, “If we do not hold ourselves accountable, how will we hold others accountable,” the Chief Justice emphasized the significance of accountability.

Salman Safdar, Musharraf’s attorney, enquired after Chief Justice Isa expressed concerns about the appeal’s lack of a scheduled public hearing.

Due to the attorney’s apparent lack of communication with Musharraf, the Chief Justice ordered that Musharraf’s family provide new instructions regarding the appeal.

The court emphasized that every citizen has a fundamental right to a fair trial, and while Musharraf’s appeal is pending, the case will be reexamine in light of his probable death.

Additionally, CJ Isa directed Musharraf’s attorney to travel to Islamabad for the upcoming hearing, which is set for this Friday.

The court ordered the Registrar’s Office to schedule hearings for appeals against the ruling of the Lahore High Court (LHC), and it also accepted appeals against that decision.

“You have to take only one direction whether to appeal or not,” the chief justice said in response to Musharraf’s attorney’s request for a four-week reprieve. He also expressed gratitude for the appeal document’s content and complimented its quality.
