Raja Riaz alleges Rs250m, New York flat deal by ex-Rawalpindi commissioner
FAISALABAD: Former Rawalpindi Commissioner Liaqat Chatha is the target of numerous accusations from Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PMLN) leader Raja Riaz, including that Chatha received an apartment in New York and hundreds of millions of rupees from Pakistanis living abroad.
Former opposition leader Riaz claimed at a press conference in Faisalabad on Monday that Pakistanis residing overseas purchased Chatha for Rs. 250 million and gave her an apartment in New York. The News published this information.
“I would like to share with you his past. He was the most corrupt magistrate in Faisalabad during his 20 years of employment there. After receiving money close to his retirement, he falsely accused the chief justice and election commissioner of corruption, he claimed.

In addition, the leader of the PML-N asked the relevant authorities to open an investigation into the former commissioner’s claims and put his name on the Exit Control List (ECL).
“Liaqat Chatha’s name should be put on the ECL and an inquiry should be launched. The last posting to Chatha was given by Usman Buzdar for Rs50 million,” he alleged. He said that the PTI tried to repeat May 9 last day but failed.
Commissioner Rawalpindi Liaqat Chatha quits
On Saturday, in a dramatic development, Commissioner Rawalpindi Division Liaqat Chatha had tendered his resignation, which he said was out of “guilty conscience” for abetting large-scale electoral rigging in the garrison city further raising the political mercury in the country.
Addressing a press conference at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. Chatha had announced to step down from his position, admitting he did injustice to the people of his city.
Thirteen National Assembly seats make up the Rawalpindi Division. Eleven of these were won by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) candidates. While one was won by each of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and an independent candidate. There are 27 provincial seats in the division; the PML-N won 15 of them and 11 of the independents.
During the infrequent press conference, the commissioner accepted accountability for the “rigging” that occurred in Rawalpindi Division. He had declared, “We turned the losers into winners with a 50,000 vote margin,” as he turned himself in to the police.
