PTI Vows to Abolish 26th Constitutional Amendment

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has pledged to repeal the contentious 26th Constitutional Amendment once they assume power. Advisor to the Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Barrister Saif, strongly condemned the government’s actions, stating they have undermined the constitution and rendered the Supreme Court ineffective through secretive measures.

Allegations of Ulterior Motives

Barrister Saif alleged that the real motive behind the hasty amendments is to evade the Supreme Court’s verdict. He warned that history will not forgive those who voted in favor of the amendment, while praising PTI members who opposed it, saying they deserve national admiration.

Call to Action

Saif urged the lawyer community to join forces with PTI to thwart the amendment and ensure its ultimate demise.

Key Provisions of the 26th Amendment

The amendment introduces significant reforms:

  • Fixed Tenure for Chief Justice: Three-year tenure for the Chief Justice of Pakistan.
  • Constitutional Benches: Established in the Supreme Court and high courts.
  • Parliamentary Committee: To nominate new Chief Justice from three most senior judges.
  • Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP): Responsible for appointing Supreme Court judges and monitoring performance.
  • Eradication of Riba: Complete elimination of interest-based banking by January 1, 2028.

Passage of the Amendment

Despite opposition, the Senate and National Assembly passed the 26th Amendment with a simple majority.

The PTI’s vow to abolish the amendment has significant implications for Pakistan’s political landscape. Stay updated for further developments.
