Power Tariff Hike Looms: Rs 3.41 per Unit Increase Expected
The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) is set to consider a request by the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) to hike the power tariff by Rs 3.41 per unit, citing increased monthly fuel adjustment costs for May.
CPPA Seeks Tariff Hike
The CPPA has filed an application to NEPRA, seeking a tariff increase due to higher production costs, with 12.26 billion units of electricity generated last month at a cost of Rs 9.12 per unit.
Additional Burden on Consumers
If approved, the tariff hike would add to the already high electricity prices, further burdening consumers who are struggling with inflation.
Previous Hikes
This comes after a recent Rs 5.72 per unit hike in power tariff was announced in the Budget 2024-25, and a previous increase of Rs 7.50 per unit in the current financial year.
New Tariff Rate
If the application is approved, the average electricity tariff will rise to Rs 35.50 per unit from the current Rs 29.78, effective from July 1.
Consumers Brace for Impact
As the power tariff hike looms, consumers are advised to prepare for the additional expense, which could further strain their finances.
