Key Provisions of the Amendment

The 26th Constitutional Amendment Bill, 2024, introduces significant reforms:

  • Fixed Tenure for Chief Justice: Three-year tenure for the Chief Justice of Pakistan.
  • Constitutional Benches: Established in the Supreme Court and high courts.
  • Parliamentary Committee: To nominate the new Chief Justice from the three most senior judges.
  • Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP): Responsible for appointing Supreme Court judges and monitoring their performance.
  • Eradication of Riba: Complete elimination of interest-based banking by January 1, 2028.

PM’s Confidence in the Amendment

Shehbaz Sharif believes this amendment will secure and strengthen Pakistan’s future. He praised political parties for putting national interests above personal interests and egos.
