 Pakistan all set to hold SCO summit as foreign delegates start arriving

Pakistan is set to host the 23rd meeting of the Council of the Heads of Government of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Islamabad, starting Tuesday. The event has drawn foreign delegates from across the globe, including Russia, India, China, Kyrgyzstan, and Iran.

Distinguished Guests

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed the attendance of top leaders from member countries, including:

  • Prime Ministers: China, Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan
  • First Vice President: Iran
  • External Affairs Minister: India
  • Prime Minister of Mongolia (observer state)
  • Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Foreign Minister of Turkmenistan (special guest)

Agenda

The SCO meeting will focus on:

  • Economic Cooperation: Enhancing trade and investment among member states
  • Environmental Protection: Promoting sustainable development and addressing climate change
  • Socio-Cultural Linkages: Strengthening people-to-people ties and cultural exchange
  • Organizational Decisions: Approving the budget and enhancing cooperation among member states

Security Measures

To ensure a secure and successful event, the government has:

  • Deployed over 10,000 police personnel
  • Called in the Army for security support
  • Deployed Rangers in the capital
  • Announced three-day holidays for public offices, educational institutions, and commercial centers
  • Suspended metro bus services in Islamabad and Rawalpindi

Hosting the Summit

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will preside over the SCO summit as the current chair of the Council of Heads of Government. He will also hold bilateral meetings with visiting heads of foreign delegates.
