Hajj Pilgrims Brave Scorching Heat on Mount Arafat
Over 1.5 Million Muslims Gather for Day of Prayer
More than 1.5 million Muslims from around the world will converge on Mount Arafat on Saturday, the climax of the annual Hajj pilgrimage, to pray in sweltering temperatures.
The Significance of Mount Arafat
Worshippers will climb the 70-meter (230-foot) hill, located 20 kilometers (12 miles) from Makkah, where the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) delivered his final sermon.
Challenges in the Desert Heat
The scorching desert sun is expected to reach 43 degrees Celsius (109.4 degrees Fahrenheit), posing significant challenges, especially for the elderly, during a day of outdoor prayer.
Pilgrims’ Resolve
Despite the harsh conditions, pilgrims remain resolute in their devotion. “Although it’s very hot, I will pray to Allah at Arafat, because I need His support,” said Abraman Hawa, a 26-year-old pilgrim from Ghana.
Saudi Authorities’ Precautions
To mitigate the risks, Saudi authorities have urged pilgrims to stay hydrated and protect themselves from the sun. Men, who are prohibited from wearing hats, have resorted to carrying umbrellas to shield themselves from the sun.
Heat-Related Illnesses
Last year, over 10,000 heat-related illnesses were reported, including 10% heat stroke cases, according to a Saudi official. Authorities are taking measures to ensure the safety and well-being of pilgrims.
