PARIS: The death of a teenager by French police on Tuesday outside of Paris in close proximity to a traffic check has shocked the public and raised concerns about the propensity of security services to use force.

The 17-year-old pulled over by the police for allegedly breaking several traffic rules. While driving a rental car in the western Paris suburb of Nanterre early Tuesday, prosecutors said.

A video circulating on social media, authenticated by AFP, shows two police officers trying to stop the vehicle, with one pointing his weapon at the driver through the window and firing at point blank when he drives off.

It showed the car moving a few dozen metres before crashing.

Emergency services tried to resuscitate him at the scene, but he succumbed to the gunshot wounds shortly afterwards.

According to the Nanterre prosecutor’s office. The cop who is accused of shooting the driver has jailed on homicide charges.

“This is a long way from any kind of legitimate defence” he said. Adding the family had filed a complaint accusing the police of “lying” by initially claiming the car had tried to run down the officers.

As tensions between the police and the community rose later on Tuesday night in Nanterre, protestors set fire to bus stops, a car on fire, and other objects.

Authorities reported that nine persons detained as a result of the clashes.
