Hamid Mir challenges Internet Slowdown and Firewall Installation

Senior journalist Hamid Mir has taken a stand against the internet slowdown and firewall installation in Islamabad, filing a petition in the Islamabad High Court (IHC).

Protecting Fundamental Rights

Hamid Mir petition, filed through his lawyer Imaan Mazari, requests the court to stop the installation of the firewall, which affects citizens’ fundamental rights. It urges that the installation be conditional on stakeholders’ consultation and protection of fundamental rights.

Internet Access as a Human Right

The petition also seeks to declare access to the internet for livelihood purposes as a fundamental human right under the Constitution.

Impact on the Digital Economy

The petition highlights the significant reduction in internet speed due to the firewall installation, harming the youth who are the backbone of the digital economy. This has already resulted in losses of $500 million for freelancers and digital agencies, impacting the country’s economy.

Government Action

The Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology has also taken notice of the issue, seeking a detailed report on the firewall installation and its impact on internet services. The committee aims to address the disruptions and protect the rights of citizens.
