ECP looking for ways to hold elections in 90 days

ISLAMABAD: Following the announcement by PM Imran Khan of general elections in 90 days. The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), which is already functioning with three members including the chief election commissioner, is looking for ways to make it possible.

Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja, according to sources, has sprung into action along with the two other ECP members to deal with the massive challenge of conducting elections before which a series of key actions are to taken.

“Legislation and EVMs and voting mechanism for overseas Pakistanis besides conducting delimitation of constituencies is a huge challenge for us. We have started consultations while some issues are already being look into.

Two members of the ECP Justice (retd) Altaf (Punjab) and former justice Irshad (KP) retired in July 26 last year. Also the positions could not filled hitherto owing to the deadlock between the past government and the opposition.

The commission is learnt to caught in a Catch-22 situation, despite having started related consultations in view of the dissolution of the National Assembly. Also other actions pending with the Supreme Court of Pakistan. The National Census Coordination Centre inaugurated by Federal Minister for Planning Asad Umar in February. The occasion that the first-ever digitized census would concluded throughout Pakistan in a 30-day period in August 2022.
