The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit is just around the corner, and Pakistan is gearing up to host the high-profile event. Chinese Premier Li Qiang is set to arrive in Pakistan on October 14, ahead of the summit scheduled for October 15-16.

Key Highlights of the Visit

  • Address to Joint Parliament Session: Li Qiang is likely to address the joint session of parliament, a significant gesture of bilateral cooperation.
  • Meetings with Pakistani Leadership: The Chinese premier will hold meetings with Pakistan’s political and military leadership.
  • Agreements and MoUs: Several agreements will be signed between Pakistan and China during the visit.

Notably, this will be the first visit by a Chinese premier to Pakistan in 11 years, since President Xi Jinping addressed the Pakistan parliament in 2015.

SCO Summit Overview

The SCO summit will bring together leaders from nine full member states, including China, India, Iran, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Pakistan. India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, will also participate in the summit.

Preparations Underway

Federal Minister for Interior Mohsin Naqvi has reviewed preparations for the summit, inspecting key areas in Islamabad, including D-Chowk, Constitution Avenue, and Murree Road. Naqvi emphasized the need for foolproof security, timely completion of renovation work, and cleanliness, especially along VVIP routes.

Three-Day Public Holiday

To ensure the smooth conduct of the summit, the government has declared a three-day public holiday in the twin cities from October 14-16.

The SCO summit promises to be a significant event, fostering cooperation and dialogue among member states. With Pakistan hosting the summit, the country is poised to showcase its hospitality and commitment to regional cooperation.
