Constitutional Amendments Shrouded in Secrecy: Akhtar Mengal Raises Concerns
Khawaja Asif Opposes Talks with PTI
Federal Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has opposed holding talks with the opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). He made these remarks while speaking to reporters outside the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) Model Town secretariat in Lahore.
No Committee for Dialogue
Khawaja Asif denied being part of any committee for dialogue with PTI through Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) and Tehreek Tahafuz Aeen-e-Pakistan (TTAP) head Mahmood Khan Achakzai. He stated that he was not involved in any such committee.
Future of Imran Khan
When asked about PTI founder Imran Khan’s future, Asif said he was not a soothsayer who could predict anyone’s future. He refused to comment on Khan’s political prospects.
Opposition Alliance
Achakzai was made head of an alliance comprising PTI, Sindh United Party (SUP), Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM), and Balochistan National Party-Mengal (BNP-M) to initiate talks with the government. The alliance aims to unite opposition parties against the government.
PML-N’s Stance
Asif’s remarks indicate PML-N’s firm stance against holding talks with PTI. The party has been critical of PTI’s policies and actions, and this move suggests a hardening of positions.
Political Implications
This development has significant political implications. It suggests a deepening rift between PML-N and PTI, making a unity government or cooperation between the two parties unlikely.
