Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi Acquitted in Iddat Case: Islamabad Court Orders Release

In a significant legal victory, an Islamabad court has ordered the release of former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi in the high-profile iddat case. The Additional District and Sessions Court pronounced the reserved verdict, nullifying the trial court’s decision and setting aside the 7-year imprisonment sentence.

Earlier, a district and sessions court had rejected the couple’s pleas to suspend their sentences, but the Islamabad High Court intervened, directing the session court to decide on the matter within a month. Today’s verdict is a major relief for the PTI founder and his wife, who were accused of marrying within the three-month “iddat period” following Bushra Bibi’s divorce from her previous husband.

The case was filed by Khawar Maneka, Bushra Bibi’s former husband, who alleged that the marriage was illegal and against Sharia laws. The court had initially sentenced Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi to 7 years in prison and fined them Rs 500,000 each. However, today’s verdict has quashed the conviction, and the couple has been acquitted.

This development marks a significant turning point in the legal battle, which has been ongoing for over a year. Imran Khan’s legal team had argued that the marriage was valid and in accordance with Islamic laws. Today’s verdict has vindicated their stance, and the couple can now breathe a sigh of relief. The acquittal is also seen as a major boost to Imran Khan’s political career, as he faces other legal challenges and opposition from the government.
